Wearable flowers are cool!

Here in the US, corsages and boutonnieres are the most commonly made floral wearables. More often than I’d like, I hear florists say that they are too time consuming to make and not cool enough to bother with, but I disagree! I think that the tradition of wearing flowers is lovely, and should be preserved at all costs.

To keep people wanting to wear flowers is our challenge as florists. We need to constantly push the wearable flower category forward- to make it more desirable to the public, and more creatively satisfying for us to make.

My life long love of fashion and accessory design informs my design decisions, and with every piece I make, I hope to demonstrate that wearable flowers can be fashion!

In this virtual masterclass, I'm going to share a collection of my current favorite pieces. I’ll show you exactly how to construct the brooches, boutonnières, and wearables I've been sharing to my Instagram. Ones made on alternative bases, with magnets, wire frames, and unexpected flower varieties that elevate a category many florists write off.

What we'll cover:

  • Composite Orchid Brooches on Alternative Bases
Built on a faux leather base, these little artworks are attached with corsage magnets. I'll walk you through base options, flower selection, and the finishing details that make these feel like jewelry instead of prom work.

  • Magnet Attachments (and Why They're a Game Changer for Your Workflow)
Magnets have to be the fastest, easiest, lowest-stress way to place wearable pieces. I'll show you how I'm using them across a range of designs — from a single bloom statement piece to a grouping that can be worn individually or as an assemblage. We'll also cover the "bolo" inspired piece that can be worn two ways.
A note on magnets: always be sure the person you're flowering can have magnets on their body. Some implanted medical devices are incompatible. We'll talk through how to ask the right questions before the event.

  • Wire Frame Brooches on Multiple Base Types
The wire frame is my preferred construction for wearables — it gives you total control over placement, depth, and movement, often with less floral material and without corsage tape or glue ( in most cases ). In this section, we'll build wire frame pieces on several bases so you have options in your toolkit for every client and every garment:

    • Alligator clip base — ideal when the lapel has a buttonhole the clip can slip through

    • Pin-on brooch base — a flexible option for garments without buttonholes

    • Petite stick pin — for something delicate and understated

  • Reading the Garment How to choose the right base for a shawl lapel versus a notched lapel, how to use the wire frame to move flowers toward the midline so the piece feels centered (not just perched on the edge), and how to select the right attachment for the person you're flowering.

  • Wire Frame Wrist Corsage I just can’t share this one enough. It’s a simple construction that yields the most magical results. If anything can revitalize corsages, this is it!

 What you'll walk away with:

  • A full toolkit of wearable bases and attachment methods for any client or garment
  • The wire-frame construction method you can teach your team
  • A source list for magnets, bases, and the specialty flowers that elevate this work
  • Confidence to say yes to the next wearables request — and the instinct to pull out the piece that will flower your person best
